30 St Mary Axe, designed by Foster + Partners and nicknamed The Gherkin for its shape, was completed in December 2003 and opened in 2004. It is 180 m tall with 41 floors, and stands on the site of the former Baltic Exchange. Its diagonal steel frame and curving glass skin made it one of the defining images of the modern City.
