The back story

About Greenwich and Canary Wharf: the back story

Downriver from the City, Greenwich is the home of time and of Britain’s maritime history, while Canary Wharf across the river is London’s second financial district.

Maritime Greenwich

Greenwich was a royal palace before it was a naval hospital; Wren’s Old Royal Naval College, the Queen’s House and the Royal Observatory together form the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site.

Canary Wharf

Across the river, the former West India Docks were rebuilt from the late 1980s as Canary Wharf, with One Canada Square at its centre and the new Wood Wharf neighbourhood to the east.

In Greenwich you can stand in two hemispheres at once.

Getting there

The most enjoyable way to arrive is by Uber Boat from central London; the DLR and the Elizabeth line also serve the area.

Our advice: arrive in Greenwich by boat, climb to the Royal Observatory for the view, and cross to Canary Wharf for dinner.
