An architect’s house of wonders

About Sir John Soane’s Museum

Sir John Soane, architect of the Bank of England, filled his house on Lincoln’s Inn Fields with antiquities, casts, paintings and models, and an Act of Parliament of 1833 preserved it as a museum after his death. Its rooms are a maze of mirrors, top-lit domes and hidden panels; the Picture Room holds Hogarth’s A Rake’s Progress, and the basement holds the sarcophagus of the pharaoh Seti I. Check the website for opening days and booking.

Why it's on our list

  • Hogarth’s paintings
  • The sarcophagus of Seti I
  • Kept as Soane left it

Opening hours, prices and seasonal openings change, so please check with Sir John Soane’s Museum before you go.
