Poppies, on Hanbury Street in Spitalfields, serves classic fish and chips, fried to order, with mushy peas and tartare sauce, in a dining room styled like a 1950s chippy. It was founded by Pat “Pop” Newland, who started in the trade as a boy in the East End. There are also branches in Camden and Soho. Liverpool Street and Aldgate East stations are close by.
