West of Chelsea, the Thames winds past Fulham and Putney, a riverside of rowing clubs, palace gardens and old pubs.
Chelsea’s riverside
The Chelsea Embankment and Cheyne Walk, with the Albert Bridge, are among the most elegant stretches of the Thames.
Fulham Palace
Upriver, Fulham Palace was the country home of the Bishops of London for centuries, and Bishop’s Park runs along the water beside it.
Each spring, the Boat Race starts from Putney Bridge, as it has for generations.
Putney and the Boat Race
Across Putney Bridge, the Putney Embankment is lined with rowing clubs; the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race starts here each spring.
Private clubs
The Hurlingham Club in Fulham is a private members’ club and is not open to visitors.
Our advice: walk from Putney Bridge along the Thames Path, cross back through Bishop’s Park and Fulham Palace, and finish at a riverside pub.
