Ham House, on the Thames between Richmond and Kingston, was home to the Duchess of Lauderdale and keeps much of its 17th-century interior, with original furniture, textiles and paintings. Its formal gardens and kitchen garden have been restored. It is run by the National Trust; in summer, a small foot ferry crosses the river to Marble Hill, and the riverside walk from Richmond is lovely.
