The Savoy opened in 1889 as one of the first hotels in London with electric light and lifts, built by the impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte beside his Savoy Theatre. Its Edwardian and Art Deco interiors, river-view rooms and famous bars make it one of the city’s great hotels. Even without staying, you can visit for afternoon tea in the Thames Foyer, a cocktail at the American Bar or dinner at the Savoy Grill. Its website lists the Savoy Grill, the River Restaurant, the American Bar, the Beaufort Bar, afternoon tea, a pool and gym, and a concierge team. He paid for it with profits from the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, and hired César Ritz as manager and Auguste Escoffier as chef.
