Brighton became fashionable in the late 18th century when the Prince of Wales, later George IV, made it his seaside retreat. It remains London’s favourite day at the sea.
The Prince Regent
The future George IV built the extraordinary Royal Pavilion, and Regency terraces spread along the seafront.
The seafront
The Palace Pier, the pebble beach and the promenade are the heart of a day by the sea.
Brighton is the seaside resort the Regency invented.
The Lanes
The narrow Lanes and the North Laine are full of independent shops, cafés and restaurants.
Our advice: start at the Royal Pavilion, browse the Lanes, and finish with fish and chips on the pier or the beach.
