Rules opened on Maiden Lane in 1798 and still feels like a Victorian dining room, with red banquettes, antlers and walls crowded with drawings, paintings and cartoons. The kitchen specialises in traditional British food, above all game from its own estate in the High Pennines in season, along with pies, oysters and steamed puddings. The cocktail bar upstairs is a pleasant place to start.
