The Blue Anchor, on Lower Mall just upstream of Hammersmith Bridge, was first licensed in 1722. Gustav Holst was a regular and is said to have written part of his Hammersmith suite here. Benches outside face the river and the rowing clubs along the Mall. Hammersmith station is about ten minutes’ walk. It is a good starting point for a walk west along the Thames Path past The Dove and The Old Ship towards Chiswick.
